Good evening friends, I trust that you are well. About a month ago, I started writing on the topic: “Come up” . I didn’t intend to keep writing on it, but inspiration has been coming in that direction, so I figured that someone definitely needs this and would be blessed beyond measure.
Now, for some reason, Terah, Abraham’s father woke up one morning, let’s say 4 am and decided to take his whole family out of Ur which was their place of dwelling. It was not that he just left Ur saying in his head, ” I just feel like leaving, and I don’t really know where we are going…”
Nah!
He left Ur with a destination in mind. He wanted to take his family to Canaan. I want to believe that before he stood up that morning, he must have thought about this for weeks, possibly months and it eventually got to a point where he just had to leave.
It’s also possible that prior to leaving Ur for Canaan, he spent time day dreaming and picturing this new life at Canaan, you know, the sun would be setting with his legs crossed beside a lake, what a beauty, he just had to go there.
But can you believe He never actually got to Canaan? fine, they left Ur, but got to a place called Haran and settled there. Not that He dwelled there for two,three or four years, but He made it a home and eventually died there. How sad!
That he had ‘come up’ out of Ur, but settled for less, gave up on the vision and eventually died in a place of complacency is just sad. Haran was probably a good place you know. It’s just that it wasn’t Canaan, it wasn’t the vision, it was a substitute, a temporary comfort. It was Haran. Note: Haran can never be Canaan and Canaan can never be Haran.
Which brings me to this.
In coming up we must never settle for Haraan. We should get rid of the ‘at least I’m no longer at Ur’ mentality. Haran isn’t the picture, remember God showed you!
Keep going, keep working towards that vision keep growing. For goodness sake, don’t die in Haran.
So you know this popular addage “a bird in hand is worth two in the bushes”. This right here is the mentality that makes people settle for less.
Allow me to tell you, that a bird in hand is worth nothing when you can trust the word of the person that promised you the two in the bushes. Pause. Read this again.
The real questions to be asked are:
- What has God promised you?
“Ah promised ke? God has not promised me anything o”.
😭This is a lie. Get into the scripture and see God’s promises to you.
- Do you trust Him enough to let go of that bird in hand?
Allow me to gist you.
Do you know that many years later, Abram was still at Haran, after all that was where his earthly father led him to, but then God told him to leave and go to a place he would show him. In other words, God told him to “Come up, I will show you”.
Now what bursts my brain about Abraham, was the fact that, with no idea in his head of where he was going, he stepped out in faith and just left Haran. On the way however, as they passed by a locality where the Canaanites dwelled, God told Abram that He would give him that land.
See, go ask Abraham and he will tell you that a bird in hand is worth nothing when you trust God- the person that promised you two.
Here are two life lessons:
First, NEVER, I repeat, NEVER settle for Haran.
Second, sometimes you may not have the big picture just yet, but once God is saying step out, we must learn to trust him. It’s a “come up and I will show you” thing after all.
